How to Choose The Best Pump For Your Construction Project

When you are thinking about purchasing a pump for your construction project, consider many things in pump selection. You will find different types of pumps available and many manufacturers. 

Every manufacturing company has different features on its pumps. Here are some tips for choosing the best pump for your project.

1. Identify the Pump’s Purpose

What will you use the pump for? Many pumps, like those offered by Thompson Pump and many other companies, have different functions. For instance, there are several types and styles of portable dewatering pumps, and to select the best one, you must first identify what you want to use it for.

Draining a sump pit or basement; dewatering a construction site; removing water from an excavation, etc. All of these uses require different types and styles of pumps.

2. Identify the Pumps Capacity

Pump capacities range widely and for various applications: dewatering (example: 2 HP sump pump), agricultural, fire protection (sprinkler systems), irrigation, municipal, industrial, and construction.

Another key to a successful pump selection is sizing the pump correctly for your requirements. Capacity can be categorized in three ways: flow rate, head or pressure capabilities, and pumping capacity.

3. Identify the Pumps Head and Pressure

The horsepower (HP) of a dewatering or construction pump capacity is another essential factor in selecting the best pump for your project. It’s always better to purchase a pump with more power and one that can produce even more. 

A pump with high horsepower will remove water faster and have a greater pumping capability. For instance, a 1 HP sump pump might only have the ability to move 100 gallons per minute (GPM) of water, so you would need multiple pumps if your project required more than 100 GPM. 

On the other hand, a 4 HP sump pump could produce 400 GPM and only requires one pump for capacity up to 400 GPM.

4. Identify the Pump’s Material of Construction

One of the main differences between different pumps is whether they consist of polyethylene (plastic) or PVC. The construction material will play a key role in how long the pump lasts. 

For example, if you are pumping wastewater or allowing it to sit stagnant for days at a time, then you need a pump that is constructed of polyethylene because it won’t rust or corrode like PVC.

5. Identify Manufacturer’s Warranties

It’s always a good idea to obtain warranty information from the pump manufacturer before making your purchase. For example, some manufacturers offer one-year limited warranties, while others provide longer-term warranties depending on the purchase type of pump.
