Manny Pacquiao had a Parkinson’s Disease?

There was no knockout as some predicted, but Manny Pacquiao made sure that Joshua Clottey knew where the Pacman stood in the boxing scheme of things: still the best pound for pound boxer in the world today.

Pacquiao defeated the physically bigger boxer from Ghana in a unanimous decision after going the full 12 rounds. Clottey played defensive throughout the match, possibly hoping steal it in the last three minutes. But the gamble didn’t pay off, and all three judges scored the match for Manny. Pacman took advantage of Clottey’s defensive stance to land several body blows and punch combinations.

Even so, the trainer wants to protect his fighter and is adamant that he will urge Pacquiao to hang up the gloves.

Roach understands the dangers of staying in the sport too long as he suffers symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, the result of his own boxing career.

“People ask me: ‘He’s the guy you’ve made the most money from, why would you want him to quit?’,” said Roach.

“We’ve done well with each other and I’d rather see him quit than continue after a Mayweather fight. I just don’t see any point in going any further.”

The 50-year-old Roach knows full well what the dangers are of staying in the fight game longer than one should; he remained in the game too long and wound up with Parkinson’s Disease as a result of punishment absorbed during his pugilistic career.

“We’ve talked about it a little bit, touched base on it a little bit. But I’d like to see Manny fight two more fights and then quit,” said Roach, who hasn’t minced words when advising several of his fighters to end their career when he saw fit to.

Manny Pacquiao had a Parkinson's Disease?

What is a Parkinson’s Disease:
Parkinson’s disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement (bradykinesia) and a loss of physical movement (akinesia) in extreme cases. The primary symptoms are the results of decreased stimulation of the motor cortex by the basal ganglia, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the brain. Secondary symptoms may include high level cognitive dysfunction and subtle language problems. PD is both chronic and progressive.
PD is the most common cause of chronic progressive parkinsonism, a term which refers to the syndrome of tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. PD is also called “primary parkinsonism” or “idiopathic PD” (classically meaning having no known cause although this term is not strictly true in light of the plethora of newly discovered genetic mutations). While many forms of parkinsonism are “idiopathic”, “secondary” cases may result from toxicity most notably of drugs, head trauma, or other medical disorders. The disease is named after English apothecary James Parkinson, who made a detailed description of the disease in his essay: “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy” (1817).
