Twenty three year old Rafael “Rafa” Nadal Parera is a former World No. 1 Spanish professional tennis player, currently ranked No 3. Nadal has won six Grand Slam singles titles, and the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles.

Nadal was ranked World Number No 1 from 18 August 2008 to 5 July 2009. In 2009, he became the first player to simultaneously hold Grand Slam titles on clay, grass, and hardcourt. His success on clay has earned him the nickname The King of Clay.

Nadal was ranked World No. 2, behind Roger Federer for a record 160 weeks before earning the top spot.

He has subsequently lost this position again to Federer following the Swiss player’s triumph at the 2009 Madrid Masters (where Federer beat him in the final), French Open and Wimbledon, as well as his own withdrawal from Wimbledon due to injury. In 2008, he was given the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, in recognition of his achievements in tennis.

San Diego Chargers star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested Sunday and accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, reality TV star Tila Tequila, as she tried to leave his suburban home.

Tequila, 27, signed a citizen’s arrest warrant, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, San Diego County Sheriff’s Lt. Gary Steadman said.

Deputies responded about 3:45 a.m. to Merriman’s house in Poway, north of San Diego, after a woman called to say she was choked by the player and thrown to the ground when she tried to leave, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jan Caldwell said at a news conference.

Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, placed a call at 3:45 a.m., accusing Merriman of choking and physically restraining her. She claims Merriman prevented her from being able to leave his house, and signed a citizen’s arrest warrant at the scene, charging him with battery and false imprisonment.

Tequila was taken to a hospital following the alleged incident. Her condition was not immediately available. San Diego County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jan Caldwell stated at a news conference that deputies determined she had been drinking, but she wasn’t sure about Merriman. Caldwell also said there were other people at the house.

After winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2005, Merriman was suspended for four games in 2006 for a positive steroid test. In 2008, reconstructive knee surgery forced Merriman to miss almost the entire season after conflicting information floated around training camp and preseason about whether or not he’d be able to play. The Chargers’ defense fell to 25th in the league in total defense in ’08 after finishing 14th in 2007.

It’s far too early to begin discussing possible legal or occupational repercussions (if any) for Merriman; there will surely be more details to emerge from this story before the dust settles.

Cablevision has announced last week that Us Open Tennis 2009 will be available on iO Sports Pak before the start of 2009 US Open Tennis championship. Cablevision has already allotted channels 399 and 795 for Standard and high-definition launch of Tennis channel.

Cablevision has urged the Tennis Channel to make its service available to Cablevision subscribers under its valid affiliation agreement, in time for the start of the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

The US Open Tennis Championships in Flushing Meadows, Queens, is one of the premier sporting events in the world. Along with the neighboring Mets at Shea Stadium, the US Open puts Queens on the sports map. The two-week tournament is held every August and September at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
