Here’s another reason to think twice before jailbreaking Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch: a new malware threatens to steal data and allow remote control of the device.

Indian security researcher Atul Alex’s malware can intercept calls, steal data, and provide a reverse virtual network connection, The Hacker News reported Saturday.

“The malware can be deployed remotely over the Web and is supposed to work on the latest iOS 5,” it said.

Alex said that while Apple products are extremely secure by design, the malware works on jailbroken devices. He said about up 90 percent of users may have jailbroken devices.

Jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system, to allow unauthorized apps to run on them.

The Hacker News said the malware malware’ features include:

Invisible Malware
VNC Server to view remote screen
Record and listen to all calls remotely
Upload/download user Data
Access all mails and texts

The malware will be demonstrated next month at the upcoming International Malware Conference (MalCon) in Mumbai, India.

Apple Inc. said the company’s co-founder Steve Jobs died Wednesday. He was 56.

In a brief statement the company said Jobs died Wednesday. He had been battling pancreatic cancer.

The Silicon Valley icon who gave the world the iPod and the iPhone resigned as CEO of the world’s largest technology corporation in August, handing the reins to current chief executive Tim Cook.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” the company said in a brief statement. “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

By the time he turned the reins of the company over to his second in command, Tim Cook, Jobs had become one of the business world’s greatest comeback kids.

The company he founded, was fired from and then returned to had gone from also-ran to technology industry leader. Under Jobs’ intensely detail-oriented leadership, Apple created several iconic products, including the iPod, iPhone and iPad, which have changed the face of consumer technology forever.

Apple also is now one of the most valuable companies in America by market capitalization. Jobs was one of the richest men in the world.

Just Wednesday the company released a new iPhone, the first such major product announcement in years that didn’t involve Jobs.

Cook sent a statement to employees that in part read “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Jobs has had a history of dealing with pancreatic cancer, but the Cupertino-based company declined to comment on the current state of his health. Immediately after he broke the news, Apple stock fell over 6.6 percent to $351 in after hours trading.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, said in a statement on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team.”

Apple Inc. filed a case against Samsung Electronics late last week for what the iPad-maker calls “blatant copying” of its famous tablet and smartphone’s design and other features, including icons on screen.

“Samsung has made its Galaxy phones and computer tablet work and look like Apple’s products through widespread patent and trade dress infringement,”

Apple said in the suit filed Friday.

“Apple seeks to put a stop to Samsung’s illegal conduct and obtain compensation for the violations that have occurred thus far.”

Apple is seeking redress from 16 alleged wrongdoings by Samsung, including 10 patent infringement charges.

Samsung, which is touted as Apple’s fiercest competitor in the tablet market, has vowed to fight the suit through “appropriate legal measures” in order to protect its own intellectual property rights. “

Samsung’s development of core technologies and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio are keys to our continued success,”

the South Korean company said in a statement.

Whoa! In the world of big-time lawsuits, this must be just about the biggest. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has sued Samsung Electronics for copying “the look and feel” of its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone. This relates to the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the iPhone 3G / 3GS models, and the slightly less obvious Epic 4G, Nexus S, and Galaxy Tab (presumably the older 7-inch model, since the newer ones aren’t out yet) devices. The claim for intellectual property infringement is phrased as follows:

“Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products.”
