Friday Night Lights is an atypical show. The characters are portrayed as normal people rather than the standard stereotypes found on other shows. The dad is a great character, he’s not the dope many shows have morphed fathers into these days. The mother is also a strong character. The family tackles issues in realistic ways. They are not perfect, but they learn from their mistakes.
One cool thing about the show is that there is a good movie and a good book associated with the series. The show is based on a great book. I recommend reading it. The book takes place in the 1980s, while the show (and movie) take place now. I read the book before seeing the movie, and was surprised how much I liked the movie although it was a bit tamer than the book. I was even more surprised how much I enjoyed the series. Of the three I actually like the series the best.
While I wouldn’t recommend watching it with little kids, there are some grown up issues that are not appropriate for little kids. I do think a new Dad and mom are a great audience for the show. I also recommend listening to Bill Simmons podcasts about the show. Bill is know as the Sport’s Guy, and does a really good job interviewing the creator of the show.
